Do you remember the dot com bull market in the late 90's or are you blacking that out from your memory? Almost every stock was going up no matter due to the stock market trend. You could almost close your eyes and pick out a winner guaranteed, or at least guaranteed for that stock market trend. What happened when the stock market trend changed, but investors didn't change along with it? Many people can still remember that horrible feeling in the pit of their stomach seeing thousands of dollars disappear from their 401K, IRA's and stock accounts! This illustrates and validates the importance of following the overall market trend.
It's hard to ignore the basic fact that when the overall stock market trend is up, 75 - 80% of all stocks also went up. On the other hand, when stock market trend is down, 75-80% of all stocks went down. The moves by individual stocks weren't based on how strong the stocks were, but were purely moved by the stock market trend as a whole.
Knowing what the overall market is doing is the key to preserving your capital in all markets.
